About the role
Just Automotive Recruitment is searching for a skilled Fitter and Turner to join a dynamic automotive workshop in Windsor Gardens, SA. This role heads up our piston rings department and is responsible for providing a high level of service to retail and trade customers ensuring correct parts supply and modifications every time.
�� Role Responsibilities
- Prepare and assemble piston ring sets to suit customer and production requirements
- Select, gap, measure, and check rings (compression and oil) to ensure correct fitment
- Carry out minor machining/modification of rings where required (~10% of work)
- Accurately measure components using verniers, micrometers, and feeler gauges
- Operate specialist equipment including a magnetic vertical ring grinder (training provided)
- Manage incoming orders and ensure rings are ready for piston assembly and dispatch
- Liaise with the piston department and dispatch to prioritise workflow and meet deadlines
- Handle day-to-day customer enquiries via phone (~10 calls per day)
- Provide technical advice to customers regarding engines and ring requirements
- Assist with front counter enquiries, including measuring customer-supplied components
- Maintain stock levels, conduct stocktakes, and prepare supplier orders
- Work independently to manage workload within the rings department
✅ Role Requirements
- Trade background as a Fitter & Turner or similar mechanical trade
- Solid understanding of automotive engines and internal components
- Experience with precision measurement and working to tight tolerances
- Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving ability
- Ability to interpret specifications and ensure correct component fitment
- Confident communicating with customers on technical topics
- Comfortable working both hands-on and in a customer-facing capacity
- Ability to work autonomously in a single-person department
- High attention to detail and accuracy
Desirable:
- Experience in engine reconditioning, machining, or rebuilds
- Exposure to piston rings or similar engine components
- Experience using manual machining equipment or grinders
